Most rehab centres have their own website featuring a "What to Pack" webpage, where you will find information regarding what is allowed. You can check the FAQs if such packing information does not have a dedicated webpage. Some centres are known to offer packing checklists, which is printable that you can refer to while packing. In case you are unable to find these information in print, you can always call your rehab centre for it. They should be able to help you with that concern. Recommended Items List For Rehabilitation

The things allowed in one rehab may not be allowed in others.

For the better part, you are recommended to carry the following:

  • A list of names, addresses and telephone numbers of people you wish to have involved within your treatment [loved ones, healthcare professionals, twelve-step sponsors, etc.].
  • Person ornaments that are used by the person.
  • Except for the above you are advised to leave all valuables at home.
  • Alarm clock with no other features like radio or what not.
  • You will be provided these items in some facilities, so confirm about this before purchasing one.

  • A bit of cash (from £50 to £100 in small bills for store runs, vending machine, etc.)
  • Bring along your credit cards or check book for settling the payment for new medications.
  • Your insurance cards and an ID (driving license, passport, etc.)
  • If you want to make long distance calls, bring a calling card with you.
  • Your personal journal.
  • Stamps and envelopes for mailing letters if you wish to.
  • Photographs of friends or loved ones you hold dear.
  • Reading materials like books however, some centres provide them to you.
  • In case you insist on bringing your own reading material, they are to be recovery related, self-help and spiritual materials.
  • ADVISE: Paperback books are more convenient than hardcovers.

What Attire Is Needed

Carrying alcohol free makeup products is what many rehabs advocate for. While other centres may allow you to bring products with alcohol component as long as it is not listed as one of the top three ingredients. Aerosols are not allowed.

Personal hygiene and beauty products that last for a month have to be carried along and they are:

  • Deodorant
  • A toothpaste and toothbrush

  • Personal hygiene and beauty products that have alcohol (mouthwash, colognes, etc.)
  • E cigarettes
  • Unapproved and previously opened medication (even if it is prescribed)
  • Nail polish, polish remover or synthetic nail associated products
  • Video games and movies in any media
  • Sporting equipment
  • Revealing clothing [tank tops, sleeveless shirts, midriff baring tops, etc.]
  • Aerosols
  • Ammonia, bleach, and other stuff used in cleaning
  • Electronic products
  • Games
  • Incense and candles
  • Clothing with profanity or references to drugs, alcohol or violence

While you might not expect certain things to be banned, like electronic products and sport equipment, but many centres do not allow them. The centres do not distractions of any form that would make you lose your focus on your road to recovery. At times, your centre will provide these items

No food and drinks from cooked or prepared by external sources are allowed. You will get 3 main meals, along with snacks and beverages. You will have to inform the centre if you have any special dietary requirements or allergies.


Items Which Some Facilities Allow And Some Do Not

  • Nail clippers may be banned by some centres, but this is not a common habit.

  • You may have permission to bring your own bedding, pillows, and objects that help you feel relaxed.

What Will Happen To A Contraband That I Brought With Me

Don't freak out if you bring along something forbidden after you get to the clinic. You close relative will be advised to go back with these items. In case you got no one with you at the time of admission, they will hold the item for 24 hours until your representative can claim it. Your objects can be kept at the centre until you finish your therapy.
